Asana, Art and Philosophy: Inspire Your Practice

April 28, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - April 30, 2017 @ 12:30 pm

With Senior Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher Mary Reilly. The teachings of B.K.S Iyengar sparingly used metaphors to clarify the action in a pose or weave yogic philosophy into the art of asana. Similarly, ancient yogic art conveyed powerful teachings through simple but profound images. These inspirations will be explored during the asana classes with Mary during this workshop. Immersing yourself in longer classes with focused topics allows for more time to work and absorb, and more time to restore and relax afterward. Let Mary’s passion for teaching guide your practice to a new depth of understanding. These classes can be taken singly or as a whole weekend workshop. When signing up for the whole weekend by April 1st, you qualify for a special early registration rate!
The workshop schedule is as follows:

Friday, April 28, 2017, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm: Grounded- The Elephant and the Square
Asana ‘from the ground up’ at week’s end. These seated and standing foundational asanas bring stability to body and mind, and allow the effects of stress to dissipate. Restoratives will finish out the class. For students with at least 6 months experience.

Saturday, April 29, 2017, 9:30 am – 12:00 pm: Fanning the Flame
Backbends ‘bring the spine in’ in a way that accesses latent energy and lifts the mood. Agni, the fire element is in play in backbends, balanced with the earthiness of leg work. Come discover the joyful aspect of these potent asanas. For students with at least 1 year experience.

Saturday, April 29, 2017, 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm: Twisting the Strands
What yogic actions support the spine and allow freedom to twist? Twisting is refreshing and nourishing for the spine and internal organs and draws the mind inward. Forward bends and inversions will complement the sequence. For students with at least 6 months experience.

Sunday, April 30, 2017, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm: Action and Reflection
How does the vibrancy and vitality of Tapas (fierce ardor) balance with Santosha, (contentment)? We will explore these and other pairings in this class of simple balances and linked asana. For students with at least 6 months experience.

This workshop is not appropriate for pregnant students. Classes will be held at the YWCA at 25 Sheldon Boulevard SE.
